Today’s question comes from Marie, and she asks:
“Is it necessary to varnish a finished painting? Some of the paintings I’ve finished have an uneven shine to them, would I be able to use “liquid clear” instead of varnish? If so can I put in on as soon as they are finished or do I need to wait 6 months as you do with varnish. “
Do you have any information that might help Marie?
Please leave your response in the comments box below.
Thanks!

Dear Marie,
You may need to varnish your oil paintings for presentation or protect them from dust or other particles. Oil in the paints seeps into the canvas leaving uneven shines with time. Damar varnish can be applied only after one year of finishing the oil painting as specified. However, 6 months can be enough time to apply it or even 3 months (if you are in a hurry). Damar varnish dries in 10 minutes and it only needs a new clean brush to apply.
