You Asked – Rabbit Skin Glue

November 3, 2008 by Ralph S 3 Comments

Today’s question comes from Daphne, and she asks:

“I tried to glue a canvas and had terrible results. The canvas buckled instead of stretching.

Questions: How dense is rabbit skin glue when it cools? Perhaps I overheated it. It seemed to be too liquid when I put it on, but it’s been a long time since I’ve done that.

Cooled, it jelled, but will pour – or glop – out of the container. I’m pretty sure I got the proportions right. The canvas was pretty light weight. Can that be a problem?

If the canvas is bought in piece goods, should I soak the original sizing out? ”

Do you have any information that might help Daphne?

Please leave your response in the comment box below.

Thanks!

    Daphne
Why not use one of the modern adesives like PVA, I have had no problem with them, and i have a friend often using it to glue canvas to board.

Why not try stapling your canvas together?

    Daphne,

This is long after your buckled canvas question. I’m having exactly the same experience with buckled canvas, after a lifetime with no problems. Wondering if I overheated the rabbit skin or if today’s glue has changed. I’ve used Cornellison’s (long stored) now Brodie and Middleton, told that it does deteriorate with time but still the same cockling occurs when dry. Did you ever resolve your problem? I hate acrylic primers.
Sorry not to offer a solution but grateful to hear if you have an answer.

    Juliet
