You Asked – Painting Over an Oil Painting

February 10, 2011 by Ralph S 2 Comments

Today’s question comes from Frances :

Frances Writes:

“I have been painting in oil and hate what I have done, can I paint over it and if so what do I use to do so. Thank you”

Do you have any information that might help Frances?

Paint over the canvas with titanium white paint….don’y use acrylic gesso or acylic paint it will not adheare to the oil paint. Once it is dry you can go ahead and reuse the canvas.

Dan, thanks for your comment. I have another related question. If I have another unfinished painting and haven’t worked on it in about 5 years, is there anything I have to do to the painting in order to finish it. It is a portrait and my daughter wants to frame and hang it. Thanks in advance. I hope it is okay to ask in this space.
