Today’s question comes from Jack :
Jack Asks:
“How can I give a matte finish(tooth)to hot press paper? I want to use smooth printer paper for pencil drawings but it doesn’t take well because of the hard, smooth finish. Soak it? Add something to the paper to give it a rougher surface? Any ideas?”
Do you have any information that might help Jack?

Hi John,
I know it is not correct to answer a question with a question; but I have to ask WHY? Why would you contemplate using a Hot Press paper, when you want “tooth”?
Hot Press is designed to be slick!
Have you contemplated a different paper? Have a look at Strathmore Bristol Vellum? Use the back of the paper, rather than the “face”.

I would maybe use an impasto technique to get that different finish that you are looking for.

To add tooth try spraying _very _lightly with workable fixative or krylon crystal clear.

White clay board works well for me. You just have to be careful with very sharp pencils ( so it doesn’t dig into the clay). I get a matt finish with enough tooth to layer pencil quite heavily.
