You Asked – Help With Glazing

June 8, 2009 by Ralph S 6 Comments

Today’s question is from Marion:

Marion Writes:

“I would like to learn more about glazing your paintings – I have read some on the subject but can not fully understand it–how do you know what colors -goes -over each color?”

Do you have any information that might help Marion?

Please leave your response in the comments box below.  Thanks!

Check out Arleta Pech web site. Her entire oil painting technique is glazing. She has a Glazing viewer that helps you chose the transparent paint color to use.

One of the unique characteristics of watercolor is being able to glaze. First,it is important to know if your paints are transparent or opaque. You can usually find that designation on the tube (if it is artist/professional grade paint) or test the paint by painting over a wide black line. Opaque covers the line. Using transparent paints, paint one color. LET DRY.
Paint over that color with another transparent color. Light bounces from the paper underneath through the watercolor pigments creating another color. This is another way of color mixing. Be sure to test several colors using the glazing technique.

If you go to About.com painting you will find that Marion Boddy-Evans explains glazing very well.
