So today’s question is : Can Sharpies be used on plastic? And the answer is yes and no. Sharpie Oil Based Markers can be used on plastic. The traditional alcohol based Sharpie Markers are not ideal for plastic. They will smear and ultimately fade over time. If you want something more permanent, then use the oil based product. Below is a short description of the oil based paint marker that Sharpie offers. As you can see, the manufacturer does indicate that these oil based markers are ideal for use on plastic.
From the Sharpie Site:
The opaque ink of Sharpie® Oil-Based Paint Markers is perfect for creating scrapbooks, posters, and window art
- Dries in minutes, resists fading and smearing.
- Oil-based markers are permanent, AP-certified
- Works on virtually any surface – metal, pottery, wood, rubber, glass, plastic, stone, and more
- Paint markers resist water damage, fading, and abrasion
I have included a couple of videos demonstrating the markers to help you decided whether or not you want to purchase a set for yourself. Equally annoying are having to wait for the Sharpie ink to fully dry or dealing with undesirable ink streaks. Fortunately, there are DIY alternative sealants like transparent nail polish or mod podge that can help you avoid this mess.
