Portrait Drawing in Charcoal – Time Lapse Demonstrations

Below are several fantastic time lapse portrait drawings created with charcoal by some very talented artists! Charcoal is definitely my favorite drawing medium. I like how you can smear, rub, brush and move charcoal around the support to create some very interesting effects. I guess it is because I am a painter at heart. Charcoal seems to mimic a painting medium more often than not. One important point before you proceed onward with the lessons below. Not all charcoals are the same. Just like pencils, charcoals come in different levels of hardness. There are also different forms of charcoal like pencils and sticks. Not to mention charcoals are made from different types of trees like vine and willow. There is compressed charcoal, powdered charcoal, etc. The only way to know what you like best is to work with them all. After much experience, you will find your favorite.
