I often browse around YouTube and other video-sharing websites for new talent to post here on my blog. Today I hit the motherload! The following is a two-part video demonstration of a landscape by the amazingly talented artist Maxim Grunin. I was in absolute awe when I watched Maxim create this acrylic landscape painting. When you see the finished product, you will be amazed as well, considering how quickly Maxim painted it. The finished painting looks as though it took weeks to create. It seems so complicated, but Maxim makes it look so easy. We can all learn a thing or two from this artist. I hope you enjoy this demonstration as much as I did, and I hope this inspires you to create something equally impressive.
Thanks for making this video available, Maxim! We appreciate you sharing your techniques with us. If you want to see more of Maxim’s videos, please follow this link to view his YouTube Page. You can also visit his blog by following this link.
Acrylic Landscape Painting Demonstration by Maxim Grunin
Maxim Grunin, a contemporary Canadian painter with a Master of Fine Arts, shares insights into his creative process and the conception of his artwork. He begins by discussing how his experiences wandering through parks, ravines, and conservation areas inspire him to capture these temporary, sublime moments in his paintings. Grunin explains his technical approach, starting with preparing a blank cotton canvas, priming, and sanding it for a smoother painting surface. He prefers using acrylics and a palette knife for painting landscapes, focusing on elements like perspective, gradient, transparency, and opacity to achieve desired effects. Grunin also mentions techniques to adjust colors and temperatures in his paintings, such as glazing with transparent washes.
He highlights the importance of combining abstract elements with representational ones in his work, using techniques like splashing, splattering, and pouring paint to avoid over-detailing and maintain a sense of freshness and spontaneity. Composition is crucial in his art, aiming to keep viewers engaged and integrated within the painting’s environment. Grunin’s approach is to preserve his work’s raw, almost unfinished quality while building it up to appear complete, emphasizing the joy and fun he experiences in the painting process.

Enjoyed watching you paint. I love the subject matter. Just wish I had the guts to use Acrylic paints. But I think that you might have sparked an urge to try again. I noticed you used smaller palettes for mixing, I wasted too much paint by loading up a larger palette and not being able to finish the painting in one sitting. I too see beautiful scenes on walks in the woods. Thank you for the inspiration.
